A case report of variant scimitar syndrome

Background: Scimitar syndrome (SS) or congenital pulmonary venolobar syndrome is a rare anomaly, most commonly including partial pulmonary venous drainage into the inferior vena cava, right lung hypoplasia, dextroposition of the heart, and anomalous systemic arterial supply from aorta or one of its branches to the right lung. Case report: A 10-day-old female infant was referred to our hospital...

Scimitar sign with normal pulmonary venous drainage and systemic arterial supply. Scimitar syndrome or bronchopulmonary sequestration?

The classic definition of the scimitar syndrome is a triad of hypoplasia of the right lung with anomalous venous drainage and a systemic arterial supply of a variable degree. We report a case in which a scimitar-shaped anomalous vein was observed on the plain chest radiograph, but subsequently a pulmonary angiogram showed that it drained normally into the left atrium.

Congenital bronchopulmonary vascular malformations: clinical application of a simple anatomical approach in 25 cases.

Congenital malformations of the bronchopulmonary airway and related arterial blood supply are a complex group of lesions in which abnormalities of venous drainage and lung parenchyma may coexist. Twenty five cases have been analysed, by a method whereby each anatomical component is separately considered. All 25 patients had abnormalities of the tracheobronchial tree, with no connection to the a...

Late presentation and successful treatment of classical scimitar syndrome

Scimitar syndrome is a form of partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage that is dramatically visible on plain chest radiography (CXR). In these individuals the entire venous drainage from the right lung enters a single anomalous large vein that descends to the inferior vena cava. This descending vein is visible on CXR as a curvilinear density along the right heart border and resembles the cu...

Two scimitar veins in an adult: repair through a right thoracotomy without cardiopulmonary bypass.

Scimitar syndrome is a rare but serious congenital condition that consists of anomalous pulmonary venous drainage of the right lung to the inferior vena cava. The appearance on chest radiography resembles a curved Turkish sword, or scimitar. Scimitar syndrome is associated with other anomalies, including hypoplasia of the right lung, dextroposition of the heart, anomalous systemic arterial supp...
